He notes the majority of people with depression lives in low- and middle-income countries.

According to the latest estimates from World Health Organization, more than 300 million people now live with depression, representing an increase of more than 18% from 2005 to 2015.

Fighting depression is the highlight of the World Health Day celebration Friday, April 7; with the theme "Depression - Let's talk" and sub-theme "It's OK not to be OK". This year, that is, 2017, the aim of WHO is to tackle the depression condition around the world.

NAN reports that World Health Day is commemorated annually on the founding day of the World Health Organisation (WHO) established in 1950.

Suicide is the second-largest cause of death for people between the ages of 15 to 29.

Dr Fikri, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, says, "Despite common misperceptions, depression is not a sign of weakness but stigma and discrimination are preventing people from seeking the care they need". Focusing on this year's theme on raising awareness of depression as the leading cause of ill-health and disability worldwide, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), and Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), along with other health partners, organised a number of events. The above underscores the importance of overcoming this challenge.

In addition, people with depression normally have several health risks associated which are a loss of energy, a change in appetite, sleeping more or less, anxiety, reduced concentration; indecisiveness, restlessness and feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness; increase in the risk of substance use. We also shall continue to strive towards the promotion of healthier standards of living and the implementation of programmes that enhance health indices of the society, particularly those of youth.

"It can have a serious effect on relationships with family and friends, as well as one's abilities".

Infectious diseases, antibiotic resistant bacterium and air pollution are just some of the major health concerns the World Health Organization has helped combat through research, government programs and collaborations for almost 70 years. Many people suffering fear the stigma of depression and the lack the support do not get the help they need. It affects how you think, feel, and act. Studies have shown that yoga and meditation can also help combat depression.

In Kenya, WHO estimates that at least 2 million people (4.4per cent) suffer from depression as the country is ranked 6th with the highest number of depression cases among African countries.
