Trump Advisers to Discuss Paris Agreement on Tuesday

Scott Pruitt has previously told energy executives he wants to be pro-environment and pro-growth

"It's possible to provide the energy the world needs while also addressing the climate challenge".

The Trump administration is changing course from the policies of his predecessor in a number of stark ways, perhaps most drastically when it comes to climate change.

"By remaining in the Paris Agreement, albeit with a much different pledge on emissions, you can help shape a more rational global approach to climate policy", Cloud Peak CEO Colin Marshall wrote in the letter dated April 6.

A February report by the Wall Street Journal stated Senior Advisor to the President, Jared Kushner, and his wife, the daughter of the President, Ivanka Trump, had stripped words critical of the Paris climate agreement from one of Trump's executive orders.

The advisers expected to attend Tuesday's meeting included Energy Secretary Rick Perry and Scott Pruitt, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Peabody Energy has consulted with White House officials, and Cloud Peak Energy Inc confirmed to Reuters it had told White House advisers it was in its interests for the United States to remain in the agreement to ensure there was a global role for high-efficiency coal plants.

At the White House Tuesday senior administration officials, including Pruitt, Tillerson, Kushner and Bannon, will be going over the pros and cons of staying in Paris.

China and India pledged to reach these ambitious goals by 2030, which means that, just like the US, they must begin staking steps now to meet their commitments.

As part of the deal, the USA pledged to reduce its emissions by between 26% and 28% from 2005 levels by 2025.

"The coal industry was almost devastated by years of regulatory overreach, but with new direction from President [Donald] Trump, we are helping to turn things around for these miners and for many other hardworking Americans", he said.

In a recent op-ed in Investor's Business Daily, Heritage employees Stephen Moore and Timothy Doescher wrote that following through with the climate change promises made under the Obama administration "would effectively decapitate our coal industry, which now supplies about one-third of our electric power". A key argument is that the US can stay in the agreement without satisfying its pledge or maintaining regulations created to help achieve the target, said one administration official.

Likewise, Tom Pyle, the president of the American Energy Alliance, say corporations want to turn Paris into an agreement they can profit from. "The coal companies and oil and gas companies that are flirting with the Paris agreement don't understand the existential threat that they're buying into".

Some argue not pulling out the Paris agreement would be largely symbolic, since Trump's already begun to roll back Obama-era regulations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
