Davison to step in for injured Bourdais at Indy 500

Sebastien Bourdais crashes at Indy, taken off on backboard

Bourdais crashed out during his third qualifying lap at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, sustaining fractures to his pelvis and hip that left him in need of surgery.

"Sebastien is in good hands here at IU Methodist Hospital with the staff and now we just wait for him to recover", Coyne said in a statement.

Australian driver James Davison has been tapped to replace Bourdais in next Sunday's Indy 500, The Indianapolis Star has confirmed. Wilson gave up his seat in order for two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso to have a go in the auto he was originally going to run.

Carpenter, the stepson of Tony George whose family owns the track, said he was stunned by Bourdais' crash.

"I'm not going to go for a run tomorrow, but I'm up!" said Bourdais on Twitter. "When they said that we have only one shot today that created a little bit of stress for everyone on the team, but I had the vehicle to be confident and to push all four laps".

Davison has competed in two previous Indy 500s, in 2014 with KV Racing Technology (finishing 16th) and in 2015 with Coyne (finishing 27th).

"It takes your breath away", he said.

Bourdais slammed head-on into the second turn wall after completing two laps at over 231 miles per hour, the fastest laps of the day. "But the good thing is, you know, when we're given the opportunity, we seem to make the best of it".

Being among the fastest nine means the Spaniard, in the Honda 29, will compete for pole position on Sunday. "We've had really good days and really pretty bad days".

The Associated Press reported, via ESPN, that Bourdais will undergo surgery for a fractured pelvis Saturday, adding that he also suffered a fractured hip.

Thirty-two drivers made it onto the track on what was the final full day of practice before qualifying begins Saturday.

Bourdais won the season-opening race in St. Petersburg, Fla., where he now resides with his wife Claire. He was still very fast today until lap two. Verizon IndyCar Series championship points are also on the line in qualifying, ranging from 42 to the pole victor down to one point for the 33rd-fastest qualifier. Davison is a bit of a journeyman driver, having raced in each level of the American open wheel ladder, as well as the former Rolex Sports Car Series and even in NASCAR.
