Disney CEO says hackers claim to have access to upcoming movie

Where be the Bitcoins

Unsurprisingly Disney has no interest in dealing or giving in to the hackers and according to Iger, the company has no plans to pay them and are working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to sort it out. While the affected movie hasn't been announced, Disney's upcoming big-budget films include "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" and "Cars 3".

Later this year, Disney is releasing next instalment of Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Ragnarok, and next episode of Skywalker Saga, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The hackers have threatened to release the first five minutes of the film and subsequently in 20-minute chunks until the ransom is paid, The Hollywood Reporter says.

In April, a group of hackers calling themselves The Dark Overlord infiltrated Netflix and released all ten episodes of the streaming giant's hit series Orange is the New Black, after the company refused to meet the group's ransom demand.

The film in question is believed to be Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mean Tell No Tales, according to Deadline.

Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow returns to the ocean alongside Geoffrey Rush as Hector Barbossa and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner.

Sci-fi novelist Paul Tassi, who comments on technology and the internet for Forbes Magazine, said Pirates would be unlikely to suffer were it the target, since its release date is so near. Last week, cyberattackers infected more than 200,000 computers around the world with so-called ransomware.

It's unclear whether the two incidents are connected.

At a company meeting on Monday (local time), Mr Igner told staff that hackers are demanding a large bitcoin payment to keep the film under wraps.
