Horschel's wife opens up on battle with alcoholism

Former Highland Park standout Cody Gribble missed the cut at the AT&T Byron Nelson over the weekend

I was playing in Ryan Palmer's charity event yesterday. That choice has changed his life significantly.

On Monday, his wife Brittany released a statement in which she disclosed the difficulties of their lives over the a year ago.

It's often too easy to forget that the players who appear so in control on Sunday afternoons vying for trophies deal with the same emotions as those who watch their accomplishments.

"That's not the way I wanted to win it", said Horschel, 30.

His latest victory evidently meant a lot to Horschel, as it would for any golfer, but he had more reason to celebrate than most.

It was the American's first win since he beat Rory McIlroy to The Tour Championship in September 2014. "To be able to play the way I did today, I played some good solid golf", Day said. "I will keep this simple, 'I am an alcoholic, '" wrote Brittany Horschel on Twitter.

"One year ago, I began a journey to a health me; mentally and physically", she said.

The couple has two daughters.

During the timeframe Brittany Horschel was undergoing treatment, her husband posted just a single top-10 finish on Tour and slid to 71 on the season-long points list before an August rally propelled him to the third playoff stop.

During a previously scheduled news conference before playing in his first Colonial, Horschel initially read from a prepared statement.

But last night, all was revealed in a tweet by his wife Brittany, who is the mother to their young daughter, Skylar.

"(That) provides us with an opportunity to speak out about the very real struggles of battling addiction", he said.

"It can be a very lonely disease, and there is a stigma out there that leads many not to ask or accept the help they may need. We look forward to sharing more in the future".

The Horschels have been married more than six years, and he said the past year has been one of the most enjoyable in their marriage.

With the fourth PGA victory of his career, Horschel moved into 44th place in the world rankings and earned a spot in June's U.S. Open after failing to qualify for the last three major tournaments - 2016's U.S. and British Opens and April's Masters. My wife is one year sober. I think it's unbelievable what my wife did. We can dip, dive and dodge around these questions, no problem, and we can wait until you're ready.' She said, 'No, I'm ready. Phil Mickelson will be with Matt Kuchar and Wesley Bryan. Masters champion and 2001 Colonial victor Sergio Garcia will play with fellow Spaniard Jon Rahm and Players Championship victor Si Woo Kim, who lives in Dallas.
