India lose 1-4 to Denmark at Sudirman Cup

India brace up for tough test at Sudirman Cup

They lost the match in straight games, putting pressure on PV Sindhu in the women's singles.

The last match of the tie saw another dismal performance from the womens' doubles pair of Ashwini and N. Sikki Reddy.

And finally the in-form duo of Ashwini/Sikki Reddy made it 4-1 with their awesome win over Della Haris/Rosyita Putri Sari 21-12, 21-19.

India begin Sudirman Cup 2017 campaign against second seeds Denmark in Gold Coast, Australia on Monday.

Denmark (6-4) topped the group, followed by India (5-5) and Indonesia (4-6) after the completion of the league stage. But India qualified for the knockout stage on the basis of the number of games won. Jwala had become relatively immobile of late, and was inadvertently preventing Ashwini from giving her best.

Up against the two-time runner-up, India came a cropper after it lost the first three ties - mixed doubles, men's singles and men's doubles in the five-match rubber.

PV Sindhu then did her job with elan. They were up against Olympic champion Tontowi Ahmad and his partner Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja. Kidambi Srikanth made it 2-0 for India with a 21-15, 21-16 victory against Christie Jonathan.

A lot was expected from World No. 13 Ajay Jayaram after his recent success against Viktor Axelsen at the Malaysia Open but the Indian shuttler capitulated 21-12, 21-7 in just 27 minutes.

In the absence of Saina, Sindhu has led the Indian team with distinction by dint of personal performance.

They would be denied a 4-1 victory and a quarter-final place, when Denmark's Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Pedersen won 21-18, 13-21, 21-13 in the women's doubles over Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu.

Former Olympic silver-medallists Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen then brought Denmark back into the contest with a thrilling 16-21, 24-22, 23-21 win over world no. 1 Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.

The only way Indonesia can progress into the last eight stage is if they thrash Denmark on Wednesday, which looks unlikely.

India, have reached the knockout stage of the tournament only once earlier during the 2011 edition.

However, in the unlikely event of a Danish loss, the calculators will have to be produced to determine the top two teams in the pool.
