Macron Pick for French Premier about to be Named

On his first full day in office and shortly after naming his new prime ministerEdouard Philippe, Macron made his first global trip as French president to Germany, meeting Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.

His appointment was seen as a strategic move by 39-year-old Macron, a former minister in the outgoing Socialist government who is trying to woo modernisers of all stripes to his new centrist party, La Republique en Marche (Republic on the Move, REM).

When Mr Juppe was beaten, the 46-year-old pledged his support to Francois Fillon but later quit the campaign when prosecutors started investigating allegations that the presidential candidate gave family members taxpayer-funded "fake jobs".

Merkel welcomed Macron's election victory over far-right leader Marine Le Pen, saying he carried "the hopes of millions of French people and also many in Germany and across Europe".

The announcement was made on Monday by Alexis Kohler, Macron's new general secretary at the presidential Elysee Palace.

Merkel has praised Macron's embrace of European unity but has offered few concrete details about the way forward for German-French relations.

However for this to work, Macron would have to make domestically hard changes to France's labor costs and taxes, now among the highest in Europe.

A former economy minister, he quit Mr Hollande's Socialist government past year to form his own centerist political movement, making him the first French president who does not represent one of the country's mainstream parties.

His visit to Merkel is in keeping with France s presidential tradition of making Berlin the first foreign port of call.

Al Jazeera's David Chater, reporting from Paris, said Philippe is the ideal person for Macron and they share common ideals. The outcome of the upcoming election will show if Emmanuel Macron will enjoy a parliamentary majority in the next five years to implement his political program. Newly elected president Emmanuel Macron's party is due to announce the list of candidates on Thursday. "Germany will only do well in the long-run if Europe does well", Merkel told a news conference after a meeting of her conservative Christian Democrats (CDU), victors in a regional German vote on Sunday.

Mr Macron's trip to Berlin, his first as president, signals his intent to also move rapidly on campaign promises to revive support for the European Union by reforming and strengthening it.

Mr. Philippe's early political leanings were with the Socialist Party, but later he came to be associated with former President Jacques Chirac and former centre-right Prime Minister Alain Juppe's Union for a Popular Movement.
