Madison school budget referendum passes Tuesday, 99 to 49

New Yorkers To Vote Tuesday On School Budgets

In addition, the board approved the hiring of Rebecca DelPrince, school psychologist, effective July 1, at a salary of $51,500, with the cost shared with Beacon Light Behavioral Health Systems.

Sagaponack voters unanimously passed the school's $1.7 million budget proposal, with 19 votes for and none against.

But in Pittsford, not enough people favored the budget to meet the 60 percent threshold needed for a "super majority" since the district wanted to exceed the state tax cap.

The final budget must be approved by the end of June.

The budget carries a tax levy increase of 2.74 percent. Voters approved the budget, with 272 voting in favor and 78 voting against. School officials said 63 affidavit votes would be verified on Wednesday and a victor would be declared.

Newcomer Tracy Vincent received 472 votes. The projected total property tax levy for the district will increase by 3.99 percent to $7.5 million, less than the 4.42 percent increase allowed to Mayfield this year by NY state's mandated tax cap. About 95% of registered voters did not for a school board candidate.

The tax levy will increase by about 2.67 percent.

Morris' budget passed 116-43, with the capital reserve 108-48 in favor and the library passing 90-69. Patrons also expressed a desire for more transparency in the district and better communication between the public and the board.

A glance at the bottom line of the preliminary budget presented last week shows a modest cut of just $8,366 to the General fund when compared to the published 2016-17 budget, and also a $20,876 decrease in the bottom line of the Capital Outlay budget compared to prior year.

In Sidney, the budget got 138 yes votes with 26 opposed.

District residents on April 4 voted down the $6.8 million capital project, which included the purchase of almost 14 acres of land adjacent to the school for the construction of an athletic complex and nature pavilion, by a tally of 200 to 130.

Two candidates were also approved to fill trustee seats on the Board of Education. Frederes inched out Cathleen Abers-Kimball, who garnered 208 votes.

Almost all area school district budgets passed in Tuesday's voting. The two people running for school board got the two seats: Amanda Finch with 143 votes and Marisa Orezzoli with 142.

In personnel matters, the board approved the retirements of Edith VanGorder, secretary, after 32 years of service; Frederick Proper, high school drafting teacher, after 17 years of service; Dennis Thiel, high school computer fix teacher, after 18 years of service; and Nancy Bridge, high school health professions teacher, after 27 years of service.

In Brewster, the tally was 762-356 while a supplemental proposition for school bus purchases was also OK'd by a tally of 776-342. The county's hearings on the budget and tax rates were postponed in April when officials failed to post legal notice of the hearings in the county office building. The budget, 98-23; library, 107-14; Bus purchase, 89-32; establish capital reserve for construction, 98-22 and establish capital reserve for vehicles, 90-29.

The Wheelerville Union Free School District's $4.4 million 2017-18 passed, 107-17. Voters approved the budget, with 119 voting in favor and 15 voting against.

Voter turnout increased this year.
