May Day rallies push for 'sanctuary state' designation

Protesters march against President Trump's immigration policy in Los Angeles on Monday, where ten.

Labor and immigrant rights groups along with some local elected officials are planning a march to the White House to oppose President Donald Trump's immigration policies.

Several of those marches took place in Pennsylvania.

Then, at dusk, dozens of protestors gathered in front of the county building downtown to denounce the policies of Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Giménez, whose administration openly collaborates with Immigration and Customs Enforcement turning over foreign nationals arrested by local police and whose names appear on detainers issued by ICE. Police made 25 arrests, including a 14-year-old who was charged with rioting.

Similar rallies are gearing up in other Southern California cities including San Diego. "He is not the king of the United States", said attendee Oscar Cruz, 58, describing himself as a Mexican immigrant who has lived in the United States for 28 years.

Trump, in his first 100 days, has intensified immigration enforcement, including executive orders for a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border and a ban on travelers from six predominantly Muslim countries.

She says her mother has lived and worked in the USA for about two decades. I was just trying to get a feel for the crowd, and they called us KKKs, fascists, Nazis. We want the people to respect gender identity. It was a scene echoed on Monday in the West Coast city of Portland, Oregon, where protesters set off fires in downtown.

"Things are so screwed up in this country". Any unsafe behavior, you're going to jail today.

"Before we were not successful in pulling in other communities to join us", Mujica said.

In cities large and small, the protests intensified throughout the day.

In Philadelphia, 1,000 teachers, who've been working without a contract for years, protested outside schools. Activists in Phoenix petitioned state legislators to support immigrant families. Activist Joey Gibson said he and other conservatives would travel to Seattle to defend against what he described as communist and anti-fascist groups who have in the past faced off with police in the evening, after the conclusion of the usually peaceful daytime marches.

Demonstrations are being held across the world to mark May Day.

Several protesters, like 39-year-old Mario Quintero, admitted they were in the country illegally but said they wanted to contribute.

"I'm an undocumented immigrant, so I suffer in my own experience with my family", said Quintero at a Lansing, Michigan, rally.

Organizers for Promise Arizona met with legislators at Arizona's capitol Monday to deliver postcards with messages of hope regarding International Workers' Day. "It is changing the way the USA is viewed around the world, as well as the way we're talking about and reacting to immigration within the country".

He added, "We deserve a better treatment".

Democratic Socialists of America, a leftist organizing group that has seen a surge in popularity following the election of Trump, is among the groups organizing protests on May Day in multiple cities, including New York City, where the group is linking up with an immigrant rights' organization in Union Square.

In the District, Maryland and Virginia, more than 200 businesses closed Monday as many immigrants skipped work, school and shopping for the day to underscore their contribution to the USA economy, said Maria Fernanda Durand, communications manager for the immigrant rights groups CASA and CASA in Action.

Taxin reported from Los Angeles. At least 200 people participated in a demonstration at Washington Square Park, according to New York TV station WNBC.
