NFL Cuts Overtime to 10 Minutes and Allows End Zone Celebrations

Super Bowl LV, which will be played in 2021, was due to be played in Los Angeles, but the National Football League has moved the game to Tampa.

Following the Los Angeles Rams announcement last week that there would be a one-year delay of the opening of the Inglewood stadium to 2020, it immediately brought into question how it would affect the fate of Super Bowl LV.

National Football League owners voted unanimously on Tuesday to move Super Bowl 55, which had been scheduled for the new Rams and Chargers stadium, to Tampa.

The NFL has a policy requiring a stadium to be open for at least two seasons before it can host a Super Bowl.

"As work continues on the transformational sports and entertainment district being built at Hollywood Park, we are looking forward to moments such as a grand opening during the Summer of 2020 and the Super Bowl's return to Los Angeles after almost three decades", Demoff said. In direct correlation to that, Los Angeles will instead host Super Bowl LVI in 2022. Over the last five years, with the 15-minute period in use, the league has averaged about one tie game each season.

Asked whether he celebrated the new guidelines approved at Tuesday's spring meetings, Goodell laughed.

"I did", he said. In the postseason, they are 2-2, including wins in the 2007 and 2011 NFC Championship Games that led to Super Bowl victories.

That means players still won't be able to dunk on the goal post, use outside props (even if it's to call your mom to tell her you scored) or do any "Key & Peele"-style end zone thrusting".

The league will continue to penalize any celebration deemed offensive or in bad taste, including those that embarrass opponents or mimic the use of weapons.

National Football League owners have approved a rule change which will limit the overtime period from fifteen minutes to ten.

Goodell's email also mentioned how the league is placing an emphasis on speeding up the pace of games. The 40-second play clock will begin once an official signals a touchdown and teams will have to snap the ball for their extra-point play by the end of the clock.

The change covers preseason and regular-season games. If celebrations are deemed a violation by on-field officials, players could still be penalized under existing unsportsmanlike conduct and taunting violations, as well as fined. Two other former players, Derrick Brooks and James Thrash will hear appeals for players.
