Not Sleeping Well? People May Avoid You

GETTYPeople believe that tired individuals are at a higher risk of accidents and more likely to be ill

Participants were asked to get a good night's sleep for two consecutive nights and restrict it to four hours a night a week later, for another two nights in a row.

Researchers then showed the photos to 122 strangers, and asked them to answer a number of questions, varying from "How much would you like to socialize with this person in the picture?" to "How trustworthy is this person?"

You may think that no one will notice your puffy eyelids, dark circles or sallow skin, but not getting enough sleep could actually make you appear less attractive to others, according to a new study published Thursday, May 18, while also making people less keen to hang out with you.

The study discovered that people started to look more exhausted and unhealthy when their sleep was halved for just two nights.

"Sleep deprivation is associated with a wide variety of physiological changes, such as impaired immune function, reduced cardiovascular health, and even impaired glucose metabolism", she says, which is why people who are sleep deprived can be viewed as less healthy. "A couple of participants were even rated as more attractive after sleep restriction". However, plenty of people fall short of getting as much sleep as they need - Gallup reports that 42 percent of adults in the US don't get enough shut-eye.

They also were asked how much they would like to socialize with the person in the photo. "I don't want to worry people or make them lose sleep over these findings". These are small tweaks, but they can help you nab more sleep and change how the world perceives you. Because we've evolved to try to avoid diseases, seeing an unhealthy-looking face makes us want to avoid that person.

"If someone looks exhausted, they look less interested in being with you and as if they would rather be asleep or alone", he said.

But sometimes we forget just how important sleep truly is, and need a little nudge from a different direction.

However, statistics show that around 1 in 3 adults in the United States fail to get the recommended minimum of 7 hours of sleep each night.

Furthermore, the study found that people's willingness to socialize with sleep-deprived people was only 2.1 percent less than their willingness to do so with fully rested people.
