Scotland stun England to seal second successive London Sevens crown

Tom Kingston returns to the Australian squad for the London Sevens

In the other quarter-finals, second-placed England play runaway world series leaders South Africa, fourth-placed New Zealand meet seventh-placed Scotland and ninth-placed Argentina play eight-placed Canada.

Losing the opening game of the day by three points to Canada on the last play of the day put the islanders under some pressure and even though they saw off Japan easily in a 61-5 drubbing, the final game against the Kiwis was not as easy and the 27-21 final score put a spot in the top eight out of reach.

The Red Roses got off to a flying start through prolific try scorer Dan Norton, but failed to add to that early score after some resilient defence from their neighbours from north of the border.

Richard de Carpentier had a try disallowed because he put a hand in touch, but England went into halftime 7-0 up. But four unanswered tries in the space of seven minutes saw them produce a remarkable 24-21 win.

The All Blacks Sevens were embarrassed 40-7 at Twickenham to opponents they customarily beat, leaving them seventh in the final tournament of the series.

They recovered to beat Australia 28-17 in the fifth-place play-off.

Despite falling 7-0 behind to a solo try from England's Dan Norton, the Scots hit back in the second half thanks to tries from Hugh Blake and captain Scott Riddell.

England playmaker Oliver Lindsay-Hague, who scored three tries in the semi-final win over Canada, was carried off on a cart early, but his teammates responded with a sensational try.

The Canadians then recovered to defeat the USA 22-19 for bronze.

The Bliztboks took out the world championship, ahead of England, Olympic gold medallists Fiji, New Zealand and the USA.

The Bagpipes were in full cry as Scotland ran out to play in their second semi-final in as many weeks.

And after his last tournament as coach before joining the Edinburgh Rugby set-up, MacRae couldn't hide his delight at his troops' display.

The Canada Sevens has a capacity for 6,430 over two days next Saturday and Sunday.

From there they beat the champion Springboks in the quarter-finals at rugby headquarters before getting the better of Canada in the last four of the cup, all before defeat to Scotland.
