Tesla starts selling solar roof; says savings to cover costs

"The typical homeowner can expect to pay $21.85 per-square foot for Solar Roof, and benefit from a attractive new roof that also increases the value of their home", according to a blog post.

The deployment of the solar roof tiles will happen first in the USA, but the product will be available globally by next year, Musk claims. It acquired SolarCity past year , another company founded by Musk, which focused on solar power and energy storage.

As an added bones, the roof tiles come with an infinite warranty. Those tiles will sell for $11 each while the active Solar Roof tiles will cost $42 each. "Deployment this year in the USA and overseas next year", Elon Musk tweeted to his 8.6 million followers.

"It is the most affordable roof you can buy, all things considered", said Peter Rive, co-founder of Tesla's recently acquired SolarCity division. This is in line with a 2016 Consumer Reports study that evaluated the ROI of installing a solar roof. "I think the aesthetics are really that good".

"Although the cost of our solar tiles is more expensive up front, it can be more than offset by the value of energy the tiles produce", Tesla says in a blog post. They can also put down a refundable $1,000 deposit to reserve a place in line.

From a more objective perspective, solar installers are estimating that most people who install the roof will find it pays itself off in about a decade on older houses and between six and eight years on new ones, assuming an estimate of $2,250 a year in energy savings. Taking all that into account reduces the cost of a new roof to close to that of a conventional roof, assuming it lasts 30 years.

Musk said that he would give more information in 10 hours, and did not reveal a price for the solar roof tiles. The company also makes a product called Powerwall, which stores energy generated by the solar roof tiles.

This is a very very rough estimate though so if you're curious there's a calculator on Tesla's site that can help potential customers find out. But for the solar tiles, Tesla says you can expect to pay $21.85 (£16.88) per square foot. Musk said initial sales will be limited by manufacturing capacity as the company ramps up its production volumes.

"So the basic proposition will be: Would you like a roof that looks better than a normal roof, lasts twice as long, costs less and, by the way, generates electricity?" "Buying a roof is often a worse experience than buying a auto through a dealership" - another industry Tesla has disrupted - so the company says it's trying to be upfront with costs by sharing a calculator.

Palo Alto, California-based Tesla Inc.is making the solar tiles at its Fremont, California, factory initially.
