Ahlin: Wonder Woman: New movie, old history

'Wonder Woman' lassos gold at the box office

A movie theater in the Palestinian city of Ramallah has reportedly banned screenings of the new "Wonder Woman" film because it's leading actress, Gal Gadot, is Israeli.

Since a boy watching Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman on TV back in the '70s I've had a bit of a thing for Diana Prince - Princess of Themyscira. It would definitely be interesting to see what direction Jenkins would take the character, but as of now, like she said, Wonder Woman is what she's focusing on.

When watching Wonder Woman, it is easy to find some sequences that are pulled straight out of Donner's Superman.

"You know, it's not like a long journey didn't happen but what amazes me is how little has actually changed from the first cut other than tightening". "That's why I let her see it". We hope she goes on to reinterpret many, many more of our favorite female superheroes.

The second weekend domestic box office numbers for Wonder Woman are very impressive.

Victims stepping up for destruction this weekend include the bad idea (and expensive to make) Mummy reboot, the Tom Cruise action flick (can we really say horror film?) that struggled badly this weekend.

Wonder Woman is now out in theaters. There could have been no better choice for Amazonian Queen and her sister than veterans Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen who are incredible in every scene they are part of. She said the pressure placed on Jenkins and Gadot is "giving the stereotype of, 'Oh, yeah, this one woman has to represent all women, ' and that's not how that works".

"She's basically telling the guys, 'No, I can do this". After three divisive but ultimately profitable releases, WB's DC Extended Universe has got the proper jumpstart it needed with the launch of Gal Gadot's solo film. On its second Friday, Wonder Woman earned $15.8 million and was off 59% from opening day, where the $11 million in Thursday preview sales are combined with its first Friday. The plot is admittedly predictable for a standard superhero origin story and the dialogue squeaks awkwardly before picking up steam in some places, and yet Jenkins' "Wonder Woman" differentiates itself from movies of its kind in part with Gadot's mixture of vulnerability and fearlessness.

The "real women who fought" for such rights, who were Wonder Woman creator William Moulton Marston's inspiration, are owed "a debt that this movie does not pay", Lepore writes.
