Bangladesh beat NZ in biggest Champions Trophy 2017 upset

NZ Bangladesh

A magnificent batting display under extreme pressure from Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah gave Bangladesh a famous win against New Zealand in a thrilling Group B match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, keeping their team alive in the tournament while New Zealand was knocked out. He was nearly denying Mahmudullah his century but when asked he said with a smile on his face: "Actually when I was about to hit the third ball I was caught in two minds [about whether I was denying him a century]".

In a desperate bid to break the stand, Williamson brought himself on to bowl his occasional off-spin but Mahmudullah hit him for six over long-on and Shakib drove him for a four.

The run chase didn't get off to the best of starts for Bangladesh with New Zealand's pace trio of Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Adam Milne tearing through Bangladesh's top order to have them reeling at 4/33 before Al Hasan & Mahmudullah put on the match defining and potentially historical stand.

In order to qualify for the last four, Bangladesh have to hope England beat Australia on Saturday.

Ross Taylor top-scored with 63 and New Zealand captain Kane Williamson made 57.

The Bangladesh bowlers were absolutely spot on, partiularly Mosaddek Hossain Saikat who clinched three wickets for 13, bowling just three overs. Inspirational skipper Kane Williamson will again be the man to watch out for in the New Zealand ranks.

Williamson, fresh from scores of 100 and 87 against England and Australia, showed his class with several elegant fours. The victor can advance to the semifinals depending on the result of the England-Australia game at Edgbaston on Saturday.

The result at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff means the Asian side can still reach the competition's semi-finals, if England defeat Australia tomorrow, while the Kiwis are out.

Bangladesh's Mahmudullah (R) celebrates their victory in the ICC Champions Trophy match between New Zealand and Bangladesh in Cardiff on Friday.

New Zealand were on course to set a challenging total at 152 for two in the 30th over.

Both New Zealand and Bangladesh have one point after two games, one point behind Australia.

"It wasn't just the fact that Bangladesh defeated New Zealand by five wickets, but the manner and the circumstances under which victory was achieved, that made it truly special".

New Zealand then lost six wickets for only 64 runs in nearly 12 overs. But it was up to me and Mahmudullah today (Friday) to take us home and we were lucky that we could contribute.

Rain delayed the scheduled 10:30am local time (0930 GMT) start by an hour but no overs had as yet been lost.

Mahmudullah joined Shakib at the crease and the pair simply picked off any loose deliveries and continued to rotate the strike. He was miserly, conceding just five runs in his first over before dismissing Neil Broom and Corey Anderson in his second.

"It was frustrating to be on the other side of it, we wanted to come into this game firing but we didn't play our best cricket, we left a few runs out there", Williamson said.
