Chernobyl n-plant hit by global cyber attack

New cyberattack causes mass disruption globally

MOSCOW/KIEV Russia's top oil producer Rosneft said a large-scale cyber attack hit its servers on Tuesday and computer systems at some banks and the main airport in neighbouring Ukraine were also disrupted.

Ukraine's central bank said several lenders had been hit in the country, hindering operations and leading the regulator to warn other financial institutions to tighten security measures.

The attack targets Windows PCs and takes the form of ransomware, encrypting users' files and demanding payment in exchange for decryption.

At the time of writing, the wallet contains approximately $8,000-worth of Bitcoin, not a large return for such a significant and widespread attack.

Microsoft said that its anti-virus software detects and removes the ransomware used in the latest attack. An email address provided by the criminals has been shut down by the hosting provider, while the Bitcoin wallet - where ransoms are deposited - has not been touched. The hackers behind the Petya outbreak "had a development budget".

He also said that tech security firms' stock prices will rise as witnessed by Sophos and Trend Micro back in May.

Russian Federation and Ukraine's rocky relationship has been well-documented, and it has seen a steep decline since Russian Federation annexed the territory of Crimea in 2014 and steadily pursued greater military aggression towards its neighbor.

Concerned over the latest malware attack affecting the country's largest container port JNPT's operations, the government rushed National Cyber Security Advisor Gulshan Rai to the financial capital today, sources said.

Some researchers suspect a Ukraine firm could be responsible for some infections. That connection was the subject of speculation Tuesday, but Microsoft now says it "has evidence that a few active infections of the ransomware initially started from the legitimate MEDoc updater process".

He added that unlike WannaCry, there was no "kill switch" - a catch-all solution that would stop the malware.

The new Petya ransomware spreads from one infected computer to others on its network, even if those computers have been updated.

Researchers are still analysing samples of malicious code and arguing about its origins. Many of those businesses were hit by WannaCry, and anyone who still hasn't installed the appropriate security updates may be at risk from this new attack as well.

It uses a similar Windows flaw to EternalBlue called EternalRomance.

While there are indications that the new Petya has more ways to move around inside a network than WannaCry had, it's likely these also make use of known vulnerabilities that have been patched.

"It will still act as a platform to spread the ransomware to other machines on the same network". Once it got in, the malware easily made its way into any system running the software and spread like wildfire in the nation.
