Defiant N/Korea fires multiple land-to-ship missiles

North Korea launches four surface-to-ship missiles

Pyongyang launched what appeared to be several land-to-sea missiles early on Thursday off its east coast; they flew about 200km, said South Korea's military.

On Thursday, the North fired several short-range anti-ship cruise missiles from its east coast in defiance of global sanctions. They landed in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, where US aircraft carriers USS Carl Vinson and USS Ronald Reagan participated in joint exercises with the South Korean navy that ended earlier this week.

North Korea's latest missile test-that of suspected anti-ship missiles that landed in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan- sends a very clear message to America: we're getting ready for war, if it gets to that point.

He also warned that North Korea could only face further global isolation and more economic difficulties.

According to USA Today, the launch marked the fourth new missile system introduced and successfully tested this year alone.

On May 29, North Korea fired a Scud-type ballistic missile from Wonsan which flew some 450 kilometers.

North Korea didn't say how many anti-ship missiles it launched, but South Korea's national security director Chung Eui-yong said Friday the North fired four short-range missiles.

KCNA said the test also touted the combat abilities of a new and apparently homemade transporter erector launcher.

The UN Security Council adopted a US-drafted resolution on 2 June, which imposed new targeted sanctions on various North Korean officials and entities.

Before Thursday's launch, Kim had conducted 78 ballistic missile tests since he took power in 2012, of which 61 were considered to be successful, US lawmaker Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Armed Services strategic forces panel, said Wednesday.

Unlike its practice with ballistic-missile tests, which are banned under global law, the U.S. did not publicly comment on this launch.

The article indicates that Pyongyang has made advances in its missile technology since North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said in his New Year's speech that the country was in the final stages of developing ICBM technology.

However the expert pointed out that the greater threat is that North Korea has also developed miniaturized nuclear warheads that can be mounted not only on ICBMs but on most of its ballistic missiles. Moon's government also said it will let two of the four North Korean fishermen rescued at sea resettle in the South as per their wishes. The USS Ronald Reagan and USS Carl Vinson had been monitoring any possible military action from the North while showing Pyongyang the extent of the US Navy's reach and might.

North Korea 's state-run television KRT broadcast a video of Kim inspecting a competition involving the air force.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for North Korea's interior ministry lashed at USA and worldwide sanctions against the Communist state, adding that such measures would only push the country to further develop its nuclear potential.
