Edmonton MMA fighter dies after boxing ring injury

Tim Hague

The 34-year-old's head bounced off the canvas in sickening fashion, and he laid motionless before the referee waved off the fight.

UFC veteran Tim Hague has been declared dead after sustaining a brutal knockout in a recent boxing match at the Shaw Convention Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

A video on YouTube that purports to be of the fight shows Hague lying still on his back on the canvas after taking a punch to his head from Braidwood.

Tim Hague suffered a brain injury during the fight.

.

"It is with incredible sadness, sorrow and heartbreak to report that Tim has passed away today", Jackie Neil wrote. "He was surrounded by family, listening to his favorite songs".

Hague's family released a statement regarding his passing on Sunday afternoon. "We will miss him with so greatly", the statement reads.

Hague fought five times under the UFC banner between 2009 and 2011, winning one and losing four.

In his next three fights, he suffered a seven-second knockout loss to Todd Duffee at UFC 102, a majority-decision loss to Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 109 and a unanimous decision loss to Joey Beltran at UFC 113.

A former UFC fighter who was reportedly knocked out in a boxing event in Edmonton remains in hospital. "He had to have surgery to relieve pressure from his brain".

The former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight competed in a boxing bout against Adam Braidwood last night (June 16).

On reflection, though there's little doubt that Hague was outmatched on the night and the fight should have been stopped earlier, to understand how this tragic outcome was reached you have to take into consideration the punishment that "The Thrashing Machine" had taken over the course of his career, and in particular over these past few years.
