Habs trade Nathan Beaulieu to Buffalo

Acquired by Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres have bolstered their defense with the acquisition of Nathan Beaulieu from Montreal for their third round draft pick in this years entry draft.

Following this trade, the Sabres have seven picks in the 2017 National Hockey League draft.

The 24-year-old defenseman and former first-round draft choice has been a solid player for the Canadiens the last few seasons.

Beaulieu was the 17th overall pick back in 2011 and had spent his entire National Hockey League career with the Canadiens until now. Beaulieu's days with the Canadiens appeared to be numbered after the team signed KHL defenseman Jakub Jerabek back in May. After finishing his final season with the St. John's Sea Dogs, Beaulieu split time between Montreal and their AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs. "After just a handful of games, [then head coach] Michel Therrien decided he had seen enough".

He added one assist in five playoff games. Montreal was in danger of losing Beaulieu in the expansion draft, while Buffalo has room to protect him.

It'll be from the penthouse to the basement for Beaulieu, who departs the 47-26-9 Canadiens for the 33-37-12 Sabres.
