Indian food essentials chana and chana dal are among the many new entries into the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) unveiled today.

It is a new word among a variety to be introduced to the dictionary, including hygge, a Danish term described as "a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being".

"Evidences an emerging use of "post" prefix forming words denoting that a specified concept has become unimportant or irrelevant", the dictionary said. While the former word refers to a man's bulging breasts, the latter one stands for "you only live once".

Robert McNicol, Librarian at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), who was invited to offer his expertise on the tennis-themed words for their inclusion in the dictionary, said the words were part of tennis' tradition.

For ten years it has proudly claimed the title of being the last entry in the Oxford English Dictionary.

Most people are familiar with the term "woke", which originally meant "to awaken after sleep", but it now carries different social connotations depending on the context, according to the OED.

The literary arbiters note that over the past 10 years, this meaning of woke "has been catapulted into mainstream use with a particular nuance of "alert to racial or social discrimination and injustice"".

Since the introduction of the term "academy" to the English school system in 2000, this type of independently publicly run school has featured heavily in United Kingdom news.

In addition to those two words, the word "thing" was given a new meaning as "a genuine or established phenomenon or practice".

Also among the tranche of new words are 50 new terms relating to tennis, such as forced error, chip and charge and career slam.

Now the list concludes with Zyzzyva, a tropical weevil native to South American which is usually found on or near palm trees.
