Milwaukee County Sheriff rescinds offer to join Trump administration

U.S. President Donald Trump with first lady Melania and their son Barron walk out from the White House in Washington U.S. before their departure to Camp David

Clarke's assistant told Washington Post on Saturday that the bombastic Milwaukee sheriff has told DHS Secretary John Kelly that he's withdrawing himself from consideration to become an assistant secretary in the Office of Partnership and Engagement.

Trump nominated Clarke for a position at DHS in April, but within days, allegations surfaced that Clarke had plagiarized portions of his masters thesis at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. The tough-talking sheriff says he "believes his skills could be better utilized to promote the President's agenda in a more aggressive role".

"The sheriff is reviewing options inside and outside of government", Peterson told the paper.

The plan had been for Clarke to begin in his new role at DHS at the end of June but according to a source close to the situation, his appointment had been subject to delays that played a part in contributing to his withdrawal.

Sheriff Clarke, who gained national attention when he spoke at the Republican National Convention last July, is a vocal proponent of gun rights and is a member of the National Rifle Association.

Critics have faulted Clarke for his management of a Milwaukee County jail where a mentally ill man died in 2016 of dehydration. Clarke isn't among the seven staffers — prosecutors said he wasn't directly involved in the events that led to the death of 38-year-old Terrill Thomas — but the death happened under Clarke's leadership, which his critics say is enough cause for his firing.
