With Hollywood now afflicted by franchise fever, Blomkamp's latest project aims to let viewers test out an experimental series of entirely new sci-fi movie concepts over the internet.

Blomkamp is no stranger to making intriguing sci-fi films.

Blomkamp broke out with his highly acclaimed, 2009 sci-fi film District 9, which was based on his 2006 short film Alive in Joburg. "We were humanity. They came here to exterminate us".

South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp has released the first trailer for an experimental venture he will soon launch called Oats Studios, an incubator for "experimental short films" that will serve as "tests for potential full feature films".

The cryptic trailer opens with a shot of a dilapidated Eiffel Tower, as a voiceover says, "We were once mankind". And after reports that Blomkamp's Alien sequel was going to be scrapped, many wondered whether the once-visionary director could salvage his career. "Adapt or die. It was as simple as that". Oh, and isn't that Sigourney Weaver tucked away in there?

According to comments made by Blomkamp on his Twitter account, the director has been toying with the idea of distributing the shorts via Steam, though has since stated that Volume 1 "could be entirely free", with YouTube used as a platform. In the meantime, Oats Studios will actively encourage budding filmmakers to make shorts of their own, with assets from Volume 1 - 3D models, footage, music and so on - planned to appear on Steam for "a nominal price". Alongside the question, the director posted never before seen photos from a mystery project that turned out to be Oats Studio.
