Pres. Trump Proposes Privatizing Air Traffic Control

Trump to propose privatizing air traffic control

"The White House principles make a gross misrepresentation that the air traffic control system is broken, but the facts don't support the claim", said Jack J. Pelton, EAA CEO/Chairman.

The union wants its workforce protected from salary and pension cuts, and the president's plan could run into trouble if air traffic controllers don't like what they see.

"Today we are taking the first important step to clearing the runway for more jobs, lower prices, and much much much better transportation", said Trump, pointing out that the USA pioneered air travel.

The FAA has been trying to get up to speed with its Next Generation Air Transport System, or NextGen, but analysts say it's fallen short of expectations. So that's another point that has to be looked at: "How would they regulate the funding for this from the standpoint of not making the fees so onerous that it damages the aviation system?"

Beginning with today's introduction of a plan to *privatize* the air traffic control system. The Professional Aviation Safety Specialists, the union representing FAA employees who install, maintain, support and certify computers and other equipment, also issued a statement, strongly opposing the president's plan.

Here's the rest of President Trump's "infrastructure week:" In coming days he and other administration officials will call on states, cities and private companies to pay more for rebuilding roads, bridges, railways, airports and other types of infrastructure.

The idea to privatize air traffic control is not new, according to sources in the aviation industry.

Bay Area NATCA representative Scott Conde told NBC Bay Area last fall there's already a critical shortage of air traffic controllers. Funding for the new organization will come exclusively from user fees, and the use of those funds will be managed by, among others, airline representatives, unions, and general aviation and airports.

House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster, R-Pa., has proposed using NavCanada as a model.

"As long as we have this constant barrage of tweets and outrage du jour, it makes Congress' job of moving legislation that much harder", Heye said.

Trump's plan to turn the Federal Aviation Agency's (FAA) air traffic control branch into a nonprofit has been widely criticized by both Congressional Democrats as well as rural airports concerned about increased user fees.

But winning congressional approval could prove hard. Sen. That's a testament to how inefficient the current system is.

"Anything in terms of impacting the system in terms of cost or safety we should be firmly against", said Mark Baker, President of the 350,000 member Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

Airlines in the USA have campaigned to separate the FAA. and ATC for two decades, but the proposal still has to pass muster with Democrats.

While Donald Trump and his administration are hopeful that Congress will authorize the privatization of air traffic control, and it would be a huge political win for them, the task of changing the most complex air traffic control system in the world will not be an easy one.
