President Trump calls United Kingdom election results 'surprising'

THE SNP has urged Theresa May to put membership of the European Union single market "back on the table" following the Prime Minister's failure to secure a majority government.

The Prime Minister refused to debate on television with other party leaders since calling the election in April and suffered embarrassment after several policy missteps including plans to make elderly people pay for state-funded care at home if they have more than GBP100,000 in assets.

May sought to frame the campaign around her personal leadership heading into Brexit, but this was undermined by public performances derided as robotic. But Theresa May had a very stumbling election campaign, and that severely undermined her status of this strong and stable leader.

Ukip leader Paul Nuttall, meanwhile, fell on his sword after just six months in the job, after slumping to a distant third place in Skegness & Boston on a woeful night for the Eurosceptic party, which shed swathes of voters to Labour and Conservatives. And the objective of its campaign seemed to be not to get close even to winning the election but simply to avoid some sort of complete wipeout.

Luke O'Neill, who voted for Labour in Kensington, said he felt Mr Corbyn had motivated young people.

With results declared for all of the 650 seats of British Parliament, the Conservatives won 318 while the opposition Labour secured 262, leaving neither party anywhere close to the 326 seats required for an overall majority.

One protester held up a homemade cardboard sign which read "queers fight back".

The Labour party seems also to have gained support from those who have not previously voted, as well as from smaller parties, the Greens and the centrist Liberal Democrats. And maybe - I was speaking to one minister today who said effectively, Brexit is a dead duck.

"Instead of peace we have confrontation by other means", he said.

May on Friday resisted calls to quit - calls that came even from senior figures in her party.

To Theresa May's credit, she has stated that she believes no deal is better than a bad deal.

MARTIN: But she is talking to a party out in Northern Ireland called the Democratic Unionists in an effort to form a coalition that would allow her to govern. Will the Democratic Unionists get something for their pains?

Mrs May was working on a Cabinet reshuffle, although the election result makes it less likely she will risk alienating colleagues by making wholesale changes as she can not afford to have disgruntled former ministers sniping at her from the backbenches.

The party's humiliation continued when it announced prematurely that an agreement had been reached. Their support base is overwhelmingly amongst Protestants who live in Northern Ireland, and it's the largest single political party in Northern Ireland.

Ms Davidson, who became engaged to partner Jen Wilson in May 2016, later told the BBC: "I was fairly straightforward with her (Mrs May) and I told her that there were a number of things that count to me more than the party". But I think the problem is this - that Theresa May, to get Brexit through the House of Commons, is going to have to pass, I don't know, maybe 20 big laws and maybe thousands of minor laws to extricate Britain from the European Union.

MARTIN: Well, so clearly there's a lot to talk about.

"Just to be clear, we will act in the national interest".

Brexit negotiations are due to begin on Monday June 19, and Theresa May has maintained that the talks will go ahead as planned despite the political turmoil. So this election has actually left not only her but the United Kingdom as a whole looking like it's in a much weaker position.
