Saudi Arabia Airline Slams Israel Plane Landing Photo as Fake News

President Reassures Qatar of Support

On June 5, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain announced they were suspending all ties with Qatar over accusations the emirate supports extremist groups - a claim Doha denies.

Both in this formal statement and a very brief press conference afterward, Tillerson expressed hope that Qatar and all other parties to the dispute would "remain open to negotiation as the best way to resolve the dispute" and "continue to talk to one another in good faith". He attended a dinner at the Kuwait Embassy and met al-Jubeir on Tuesday, before joining Tillerson on Wednesday.

Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said yesterday that demands by Arab states that his country stop aiding terrorism were baseless and unacceptable, Al Jazeera television reported.

The US has called on the Gulf states to present a "reasonable and actionable" list of demands to Doha.

Saudi Arabia's official state news agency, citing an official source, said the Kingdom had chose to break relations with Qatar "proceeding from the exercise of its sovereign right guaranteed by worldwide law and the protection of national security from the dangers of terrorism and extremism".

But Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, also in Washington, refused to budge over the three-week-old squabble, which has left Qatar, a US ally, isolated under a trade and diplomatic embargo set by its Gulf Arab neighbors.

They also demand a closer alignment with the policies of the other Gulf States, especially with regard to mutual support in the fight against internal political opposition.

The Qatari foreign minister is also in Washington where he held talks with Mr Tillerson on Tuesday, shortly before the U.S. secretary of state met with Kuwaiti minister of state for cabinet affairs Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al Sabah whose country has taken on the role of mediator in the dispute. Qatar has rejected numerous terms as foreign interference.

The Saudi Arabia-led block is considering fresh sanctions against Qatar.

Meanwhile, UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression David Kay said the closure of Al Jazeera would "strike a major blow against media pluralism in a region already suffering from severe restrictions on reporting and media of all kinds". Much has been made of the distance between President Trump's enthusiastic support for the Saudi position and Tillerson's preference for a speedy negotiated end to the embargo.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain cut ties to Qatar this month and restricted its access to land, sea and air routes before issuing a steep list of demands.

Going forward, the US won't weigh in on which demands Qatar should meet and which are unrealistic, but wants the two sides to figure that out, Nauert said at the briefing Tuesday.
