Simona Halep can't explain stunning comeback against Elina Svitolina

Five things we learned on Day 9 of Roland Garros - There's music in them thar stands. And Stan Wawrinka is fine the noise.

Svitolina managed to hold her serve to force the issue into a tie-break and once again, Halep managed to recover from a poor start. The third-seeded Swiss, a three-time Grand Slam champion, faces 15th-seeded Gael Monfils on Court Phillipe Chatrier.

Murray was barely tested in the fourth round, beating 21-year-old Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Bacsinszky has put over 70 percent of her first serves into play in her past two matches, but she's only won about 59 percent of those point - a sure sign that her serve is assailable.

Wawrinka, who won at Roland Garros in 2015, will face either top-ranked Andy Murray or No. 8 Kei Nishikori.

The terre battue was a bleak streak as Simona Halep gazed at the ground staring down a 6-3, 5-1 deficit to an oppressive Elina Svitolina. And as Muguruza walked to the locker room after her defeat, she wagged a finger toward the stands before bursting into tears during her post-match interview.

Third seed and 2014 French Open runner-up Simona Halep yesterday charged into the last eight at Roland Garros, with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro. Her French Open record before this tournament was 6-6, but only two of those wins were in the main draw.

"It's been very rare that a player can come in and get 15,000 people chanting and yelling for them and not feel pressure and not feel scared and she's embracing it".

She clinched the set when her forehand rattled the top of the tape and dropped over.

She is to play either Elina Svitolina of Ukraine or qualifier Petra Martic, the world 290 from Croatia, for a place in the semi-finals.

Svitolina faced the threat of being knocked out from the tournament as she trailed 2-5, while making a powerful comeback into the match as she won the last five games, setting up a quarter-final clash with Halep.

Title favourite Halep was being overpowered and looked set for a disappointing exit before turning things around to win 3-6 7-6 (8/6) 6-0.

But nearly out of the tournament at 2-5 in the deciding set, she got into "Svitolina mode".

Svitolina, who leads the tour this year with 31 wins and four titles, is bidding to become the first Ukrainian woman to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament. And it seems like sometimes it got to her.

"Didn't have my weapons on my side and the movement was bad", Pliskova, who next faces former French Open runner-up Simona Halep, told a news conference.

"I just tried to make her move more, to open [up] the court, and it came". But it wouldn't surprise me if we had a different Grand Slam champion in Wimbledon, and maybe even at the US Open.

Novak Djokovic is out of the French Open.

Cilic advanced as Kevin Anderson retired hurt with a leg injury, when trailing the Croat 6-3, 3-0.
