Special counsel Mueller investigating Trump for obstruction of justice

After Trump fired FBI Director James Comey on May 9, Rosenstein appointed Mueller as a special counsel to oversee the FBI investigations into Russia's attempts to interfere with the 2016 election, and any signs of collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

A Trump friend who was spotted visiting the White House on Monday later told a PBS interviewer that the president was indeed mulling over firing Mueller.

Newsmax founder Chris Ruddy's decision to say that President Trump is weighing firing special counsel Robert Mueller harmed Trump's ability to fire him, a Trump confidant told The Daily Caller.

Ruddy added, "I personally think it would be a very significant mistake".

A White House official stressed that Ruddy "speaks for himself", not the Trump administration. Ruddy however, doubled down on the idea, telling NBC in a statement Spicer's statement was "bizarre" and doesn't deny his claim.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions heatedly denied on Tuesday having an undisclosed meeting with Russia's ambassador to the USA and declared it was a "detestable and appalling lie" to suggest he was aware of or took part in any collusion between Russian Federation and the election campaign that sent Donald Trump to the White House. "I think there's a conflict there".

Not only would it demonstrate an overly-muscular declaration that the president is willing to dismiss anyone who poses a personal threat, it would suggest that he is nervous about what Mueller might uncover in the ongoing Russian probe, in which Comey testified, damningly, last week.

"The attorney general could fire him, that's the only person who could fire him."
"With respect to the subject, only the president or his attorneys are authorized to comment". "I don't think he's really pondering it", Rep. Adam Kinzinger said.

"Comey", York writes, "is a good friend of special counsel Robert Mueller - such a good friend, for about 15 years now, that the two men have been described as 'brothers in arms.'".

Sessions criticized Comey's handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation, which the White House had initially cited as the ostensible reason for his firing. Muller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and Trump could order Rosenstein to fire him or he could order that regulations that govern the appointment be repealed and then fire Mueller himself.

He says he is confident that Mueller will have "the full independence he needs" to investigate thoroughly.

He said he changed his mind because of Comey's admitted leaking, the "close" Comey-Mueller relationship and because Mueller is hiring "partisans".

Trump had also interviewed Mueller for the role of FBI director before Mueller was appointed special counsel in charge of the Russian Federation investigation.

Mueller and former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey worked closely for years in the George W. Bush administration, when Mueller was Federal Bureau of Investigation director and Comey was deputy attorney general.

Trump, however, lacks the legal authority to directly fire Mueller. Trump decided he had to fire Flynn on February 13, saying even as he did so that Flynn had done nothing wrong and shouldn't be punished.

Other Trump supporters homed in on the sequence of Mueller's job interviews.

"If President fired Bob Mueller, Congress would immediately re-establish independent counsel and appoint Bob Mueller", the California lawmaker tweeted.
