Subway train in Manhattan derails, injuring 34 passengers

Multiple Subway Lines Shut Down After Possible Derailment, Power Loss

One vehicle of a subway train derailed in Upper Manhattan, triggering a power outage that halted service on four lines and stranded some straphangers Tuesday morning.

MTA chair Joe Lhota said at a press conference Tuesday that the incident occurred at 10:15 a.m. when the train's emergency brake was pulled resulting in two trains derailing. Pictures and video posted on social media showed passengers evacuating through darkened subway tunnels.

A southbound A train struck a wall in a tunnel in Harlem around 9:45 this morning, causing two cars to jump off the tracks. Fire officials said that 17 people were being treated at hospitals for non-life threatening injuries.

Officials say the derailed train is in the process of being removed from the track.

Emergency personnel have responded to a Manhattan subway station where passengers were reporting smoke and a loss of power.

Another passenger said on Twitter that there were sparks seen after the train hit the wall inside the station.

"It wasn't heavy smoke, but it was frightening", he said.

The Riders Alliance, an organization of subway and bus riders in NY, blamed the derailment on the state's governor, Andrew Cuomo.

Riders Alliance Executive Director John Raskin also asked Gov. Cuomo to fix a problem that seems never-ending. Shuttle A Subway train service between 168 St and Inwood-207 St in both directions.
