'Transformers: The Last Knight' debuts to a franchise low

Paramount

The fifth installment in the series, directed by Michael Bay, brought in an estimated 45.3 million US dollars in North America Friday through Sunday and a five-day total of 691 million USA dollars since its opening last Wednesday, according to studio figures collected by comScore.

The Last Knight bumped last weekend's champion Cars 3 down to the number two spot, securing a box office victory with an estimated $45.3 million opening. This marks the lowest domestic opening of a Transformers movie yet, debuting with at least a full $50 million less than previous releases Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($109 million), Transformers: Dark of the Moon ($97.9 million), and Transformers: Age of Extinction ($100 million).

Wonder Woman and Cars 3 tied for second place, both with 25.2 million USA dollars (£19.6 million). It's nearest competition at the box office, '#Wonder Woman', continued on its record-setting pace.

The big news centers on the Gal Gadot-led flick, though: having now taken in more than $300 million domestically, it is now the top-grossing live-action film ever directed by a woman! At US$652.9 million globally, Wonder Woman is the highest-grossing film directed by a woman, not accounting for inflation. Lionsgate is handling the theatrical release. China made up the lion's share, or $123.4 million, although Hollywood studios only get back 25 percent of box-office returns from the Middle Kingdom, compared with 40 percent or so from most foreign markets. Even the first movie fared better with $70.5 million its opening weekend.

Looking ahead to next weekend, Sony Pictures will roll out Baby Driver on Wednesday, June 28, with the Universal animated sequel Despicable Me 3, Warner Bros.' comedy The House and The Weinstein Company's Amityville: The Awakening arriving in theaters Friday June 30 to close out the month. There's still a solid chance of it avoiding being a money loser for Universal if the worldwide grosses continue to rack up, though domestically it will remain a flop with a final total of probably around $80 million. 'All Eyez on Me' fell a massive 78%, earning just $5.8 million.

The Mummy rounds out the top 5 with $6.1 million, down 58.2%.

Scarlett Johansson's Rough Night was down 41% in its second weekend with $4.7 million. Although the film lost no Middle Kingdom screens between Saturday and Sunday, folks simply didn't turn up - and daily growth was also stymied in other hubs contrary to typical patterns on a movie that was teed up for overseas, and China in particular.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2", $3 million. And Sofia Coppola's Cannes Film Festival hit The Beguiled averaged $60,000 per theater in four theaters, comScore says.

Things might sound good overseas, but The Last Knight is not impressing North American audiences.

"Alien: Covenant", $2.3 million.
