Trump acknowledges for first time he's under investigation

Trump uses social media to question probe of his campaign

Mr Trump did not identify "the man" but appeared to be questioning the integrity of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the Justice Department's No 2 official who appointed Mr Mueller on May 17, supervises the probe and wrote a memo to Mr Trump critical of Mr Comey that preceded Mr Comey's firing.

The probe by special counsel Robert Mueller, a former FBI chief, "marks a major turning point in the almost year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin", The Washington Post had reported.

Others have pointed to news that Mueller interviewed with Trump for the Federal Bureau of Investigation director post after Comey's firing.

In an early-morning tweetstorm, Trump blasted the investigation as a "witch hunt" and a "phony story".

On Friday, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said that Trump technically "cannot obstruct justice" because he is the president.

The FBI probe, now in the hands of special prosecutor Robert Mueller, shifted its focus to allegations of obstruction in the days after Trump fired the agency's then director James Comey on May 9.

A Trump confidant said this week the president had considered firing Mueller.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is also under investigation as a member of the Trump campaign, leading Sessions to recuse himself from the case and allowing Rosenstein to appoint Mueller to head the investigation, reports Fox News.

Mr Pence's office confirmed he had retained Richard Cullen, a former Virginia attorney general and U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to assist "in responding to inquiries" from Mr Mueller. Nor did he deny he has entered the miniscule ranks of sitting presidents who have become the subject of a criminal investigation.

Friday's tweets have taken other aides across the White House by surprise.

Trump also bragged to visiting Russian diplomats that getting rid of Comey relieved him of "great pressure because of Russia".

In his latest tweet, the president seemed to confirm he is under investigation for possible obstruction of justice. And when it comes to Trump and Russian Federation it was entirely warranted.

The poll also found that there is a growing level of concern regarding the contact that Trump's affiliates had with Russian officials over the course of previous year.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go", Trump told Comey, the Times reported.

Rosenstein, 52, has said little publicly, but a cryptic statement he released late Thursday captured some of the strain and frustration he is probably feeling about the numerous unauthorised leaks about the Russian Federation investigation that have angered the president, according to several of his colleagues and friends.

Thursday, Trump griped he was receiving unfair treatment from investigators compared with his election opponent, Hillary Clinton.
