USA special envoy met with remaining 3 Americans in North Korea

Doctors: Ex-North Korea detainee Otto Warmbier has severe brain injury

Warmbier has undergone a battery of tests since his arrival at the UC Medical Center on Tuesday night.

Doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center say his condition, while stable, is severe, and that he suffered extensive loss of tissue in all regions of his brain.

"He shows no signs of understanding language or responding to verbal commands", the doctor said, adding that Warmbier's condition is best described as "unresponsive wakefulness".

Fred Warmbier was visibly emotional during a news conference on Thursday, where he said his son Otto, fought to stay alive through the brutality and terror he endured in North Korea. "Since the United States does not maintain diplomatic or consular relations with North Korea, the USA government has no means to provide normal consular services to US citizens in North Korea".

Without speculating on the cause of his injuries, Kanter and his colleagues said they found no evidence based on his condition to support the regime's explanation of botulism.

He said there was no reason for North Korea to keep his son's condition secret for more than a year and to deny him top medical care. For this he was sentenced to 15 years hard labor on a charge of "hostile acts against the state" following a one-hour trial in March 2016.

Fred Warmbier said he's relieved his son is home with those who love him, but angry he was so brutally treated for so long.

Rodman, who arrived in Pyongyang on Tuesday, was scheduled to fly to Beijing before returning to the United States. (Reuters) "We've been we've been brutalized for the last 18 months with misinformation, no information", "Do I think the past administration could have done more?" Fred Warmbier said at a news conference Thursday that Trump had said he was "sorry" and criticized his predecessor Barack Obama for his failure to obtain Otto Warmbier's release earlier.

"He has spontaneous eye opening and blinking", Dr. Daniel Kanter, who is head of the hospital's neurocritical care program, told reporters on Thursday.

The U.S. recently obtained intelligence reports suggesting that North Korean authorities repeatedly beat Warmbier while he was in custody, a senior American official told The New York Times.

This type of brain injury is usually seen as a result of cardiopulmonary arrest, meaning heart or lung malfunctions may have prevented oxygen from reaching the brain through a person's blood supply, causing brain tissue to die, he explained. Aside from Otto, three others Americans are still detained in the country.

"I knelt down by his side, and I hugged him, and I told him I missed him and I was so glad that he made it home", Fred Warmbier said.

"It was taken in North Korea with members of his tour group", Warmbier's younger brother Austin said as he released the video, according to The Daily Mail.

Fred Warmbier expressed gratitude for the USA administration's efforts in his son's favour, and said he spoke personally with President Donald Trump late Wednesday night. However, Rodman reportedly said the issue was "not my objective right now". Three other Americans remain detained in North Korea.

The U.S. Department of State "strongly warns" American travelers against visiting North Korea.
