White House discussing moving Spicer to senior communications role

Sean Spicer likely out as press secretary, Laura Ingraham reportedly among possible replacements

The White House will address the issue of the existence of any possible recordings between President Donald Trump and former FBI Director James Comey "probably" this week, press secretary Sean Spicer said Monday.

Per Politico, Spicer is vying for a position in the administration that would be more senior than press secretary and communications director.

Deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who regularly fills in when Spicer's unavailable, reportedly said she isn't interested in being press secretary.

Acosta accused the White House of not wanting the American people to see and hear their answers to questions, "When we're asking important questions about where are the tapes, does the president have recordings of his conversations here at the White House?"

Spicer would likely hand off duties for the daily briefings, but continue to manage the communications and press office, according to the network.

The new approach represents a departure.

"The White House press secretary is getting to a point, Brooke, where he's just kind of useless", Acosta added.

The scouting process has been in full swing since communications director Michael Dubke resigned from the role last month.

With the upcoming changes, Spicer will assume a supervisory role over both the press and communications offices.

Discussions on reorganizing the White House communications operation are still preliminary, though, Bloomberg reported Monday, citing two people familiar with the matter. A source that is in frequent contact with the president told TheDC that Trump has considered firing Spicer on numerous occasions.

While the president would still like Spicer to do briefings from time to time, Spicer's preference is to work exclusively behind the scenes.
