AG Sessions slams violence in Chicago

US-POLITICS-TRUMP-IMMIGRATION

The president wrote; "Crime and killings in Chicago have reached such epidemic proportions that I am sending in Federal help. He is here to help people".

Months after taking to Twitter to say he would send in "the Feds" to help reduce Chicago's murder rate, President Trump's administration has sent in agents to combat the ongoing violence. This was an increase of nearly 60 percent and was more than the number of murders in New York City and Los Angeles, combined.

Breitbart News reported that Chicago had almost 4,400 shootings and almost 800 homicides in 2016.

Through Friday, 1,360 shootings had been reported in the city, about 200 fewer than during the same period in 2016.

Not unlike many of his "crossing the presidential line" dictations, it's questionable whether he even has the lawful authority to send in federal agents for crimes committed within a city council government.

The tweet came ahead of a press conference announcing a new "Strike Force" - a collaboration between the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives bureau and the Chicago Police Department. The group became operational on June 1, Sessions said.

"We are foundationally changing the way we fight crime in Chicago", Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said in a statement on Friday.

But violence in the city has remained higher throughout 2017 than it was in years past, and there have been about as many people killed in shootings this year as in 2016.

"And I am confident in Celinez Nunez, the new Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of ATF, who has experienced the tragic consequences of gang violence firsthand".

The task force will work with the Chicago police department's Organized Crime Bureau and the ATF's Chicago field office.

Never mind that the Chicago Police Department has earned a reputation as one of the most brutal and racist in the United States.

The van first hit Chicago's streets three weeks ago, and is scheduled to remain in the city until the end of July - but local officials including Mayor Rahm Emanuel said they would ask Attorney General Jeff Sessions to allow the van to stay until Labor Day.

The police department said it would welcome help from the newly formed team.
