Fate of 39 Indians missing in Iraq for 3 years still unknown

Sushma Swaraj making statement on missing Indians in Mosul

As she initially rose to give her statement on the prevailing situation in Mosul with regard to the 39 Indian hostages, the Opposition shouted her down to the point where Swaraj said, "I am ready to speak as the matter is serious, can't give a statement in such uproar".

Making a statement during the zero hour in the Rajya Sabha, she said the government will continue to pursue the search operations and wanted the approval of the House in this regard.

Swaraj said during her interaction with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari here on Monday, she sought an update on the missing Indians backed up by evidence. She however said that in all her meetings with the families of the missing people, she has always made it clear that there was no evidence about them being alive, just as there was no evidence that they were dead.

Swaraj confirmed that in 2014, she has had 6 sources telling her that the missing Indians are not dead. But when she ordered inquiry, there were no corpses or blood stains in Mosul.

Referring to the demolition of the Badush jail, she said she had suggested to the Iraqi foreign minister to look for the jail warden and find out details from him about the Indians. "He told me that in Iraq it is said that wait is worse than death", Swaraj said. "But, if anyone of them comes back (alive), then they should also own up the responsibility (of dealing with such a situation)", she said.

"It is a sin to declare a person dead without concrete evidence". The workers were trying to leave Mosul when they were intercepted, reported NDTV. Balwant was one of about 39 Indian construction workers kidnapped by the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) when it overran Iraq's second largest city of Mosul in 2014. He never said they are dead.

"There were contradictions in Masih's version". She asked the Opposition to ask the families concerned whether they believed she was lying. I am still calling them as "missing persons", will continue to search for them, she added. The government, Swaraj said, has been in touch with countries in the region, including Turkey, which can help India in the case.
