Hyperloop One completes first test run: "It's here now"

Hyperloop One completes first test run:

Hyperloop One is still a long way from starting construction on its first commercial projects, including a 12-minute link between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Dubbed the XP-1, the 28-foot aluminum and carbon fiber pod will simulate transporting passengers and cargo through Hyperloop's network of high-speed tubes.

In a blog post following the trial run, Co-founders Josh Geigel and Shervin Pishevar expressed their optimism about the future of the transportation system.

"For the first time in over 100 years, a new mode of transportation has been introduced", said Pishevar.

Through it all, however, Hyperloop One had been able to build test tracks in Nevada.

Hyperloop One - the Los Angeles-based team that picked up and ran with Musk's idea in 2014 - just released video of its first full-scale test run.

The goal of this first test was not to achieve record-breaking speeds, but to simulate the conditions of an aircraft flying at 200,000 feet.

Will the Hyperloop ever come to fruition and change the way we travel? The company showed a video of a sled speeding through the vacuum Hyperloop tube.

That's nowhere near the ~700 miles per hour speed that they originally planned the system to enable, but the full-scale 500-meter test track is also shorter than the previously announced 1-mile long tube and it's only the first phase of testing the propulsion system in a near vacuum. Hyperloop's first trial was successful in demonstrating that the same effect could be achieved using vacuum tubes. The windowless pod is created to carry both passengers and cargo, according to Hyperloop One.

"In this historic moment, Hyperloop One tested all the system's components, including its highly efficient motor, vehicle suspension, magnetic levitation, electromagnetic braking, vacuum pumping system and more, proving the full system's components operate successfully as a single integrated unit in a vacuum", Hyperloop said. The pods would be propelled by linear induction motors and air compression, and, in Musk's vision, be a safer and lower-cost alternative to other modes of travel. "Now that we've tested our Hyperloop system, we know it works, and we're ready to deploy it to the rest of the world".
