Maryam Mirzakhani Cause Of Death: How Did The Fields Medalist Die?

Iranian math genius Mirzakhani passes away

Mirzakhani was the first woman and first Iranian to receive the honor since its creation in 1936.

"This isn't the kind of thing you do to win at pool, but it's the kind of thing you do to win a Fields Medal", University of Wisconsin professor Jordan Ellenberg wrote in a Slate article in 2014.

In 1994, she won the gold medal in the Iranian International Mathematical Olympiad at age 17.

Mirzakhani had been battling cancer for four years.

Friend Firouz Naderi announced Mirzakhani's death on Saturday on Instagram and relatives subsequently confirmed her death to the Mehr agency in Iran.

Mirzakhani attended an all-girls high school in Tehran and grew up during the Iran-Iraq war. "Her contributions as both a scholar and a role model are significant and enduring, and she will be dearly missed here at Stanford and around the world". Kerckhoff is a mathematics professor at Stanford and was one of Mirzakhani's collaborators. The disease finally spread to her bone marrow, Iranian media said. "That was the case starting with her thesis work, which generated several papers in all the top journals". "Mirzakhani was the first Iranian woman elected to the National Academy of Sciences a year ago, in recognition of her 'distinguished achievement in original research.' She was in good company: Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell were past honorees".

She then earned her bachelor's degree from Iran's prestigious Sharif University of Technology in 1999, and followed up the rest of her education in the United States, where she earned a doctoral degree from Harvard University in 2004 and became full professor of mathematics at Stanford at the age of 31. "Sad to learn about the passing of #MaryamMirzakhani - the intelligent #Iranian daughter, wife, mother, professor".

The resulting paper, now more than 200 pages in length, was published in 2013.

Mirzakhani is survived by her husband Jan Vondrák, a Czechtheoretical computer scientist and applied mathematician who is an associate professor at Stanford University, and a daughter named Anahita.

Early in her life, Mirzakhani had wanted to be a writer.
