Merkel criticizes Trump trade policy before G20

US President Donald Trump speaks in Poland

The White House said Trump has calls scheduled Monday morning with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

Trump is facing his first meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin along the sidelines of an global summit in Germany.

Chinese President, Xi Jinping, arrived in Berlin on Wednesday, part of a flurry of diplomatic meetings in advance of G20 summit slated for Friday and Saturday in Hamburg.

Meanwhile, his supporters have praised what they see as his commitment to protecting USA jobs.

Tens of thousands of protesters are expected to march in the city against globalisation and what they say is corporate greed and a failure to tackle climate change.

"It is a great pleasure for us to welcome you here today at a time of turmoil in the world, when China and Germany can make a contribution to calming down this turmoil somewhat", Merkel said.

The memorable moment between the Chancellor and President Trump occurred during the pair's first meeting, where the President appeared to have forgotten to shake Merkel's hand.

On Monday, presenting her party's election platform, Merkel predicted "a whole series of thorny issues" at the G20.

Around 30 protests have been scheduled ahead of the summit, and the organizers are hoping for a total turnout of more than 100,000 people.

"Where they have commonality would be on economic growth", he said. But the G20 meeting in Hamburg next week will be different.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, in the Sunday edition of the daily Bild, warned that any violence "should be nipped in the bud".

"We need to let our dialogue mechanisms at different levels play a leading role and enhance strategic communication on bilateral relations and major worldwide and regional issues", Xi said.

With over 20,000 officers manning the event, demonstrators plans to camp outside the fairground where the G-20 meeting will take place.

In the conversation with Abe, the White House said both leaders were united on increasing pressure on North Korea to "change its unsafe path" and the United States and Japan are ready to respond to "any threat or action taken by North Korea".

The two leaders have also clashed over Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.
