RIP Martin Landau, Oscar-Winning Star of 'Ed Wood' and 'Mission: Impossible'

Stars pay tribute to Martin Landau

With a career spanning six decades and industry accolades including an Academy Award and a trio of Golden Globes behind him, Hollywood veteran actor Martin Landau passed away on Saturday at the age of 89.

Arquette recalled working with the star on cult movie Ed Wood, calling her time with him "a joy", adding, "What a talented, sweet generous actor", while Matlin shared: "So sad to read about the passing of Martin Landau".

Landau's most dazzling performance was as Bela Lugosi in the Tim Burton-directed pic Ed Wood, the role that landed him an Oscar win.

Landau received an Emmy nomination for each of his three seasons on M:I, taking home the Golden Globe for Best TV Star - Male in 1968. He won an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the part, which was his first of a number of collaboration with Burton.

Orlando Jones posted a portrait Landau drew for him.

In a 2016 interview with The Washington Times, Landau explained what he thought of acting in the 21st century.

The lanky, offbeat-looking veteran of the Actors Studio, for he which he was now West Coast co-artistic director, had many ups and downs in his career.

The chameleon-like actor first gained fame as the crafty master of disguise Rollin' Hand in the 1960s TV show Mission: Impossible.

There are some roles that Landau took on in various mediums that could genuinely surprise you - for example, that he voiced the villain Scorpion in the classic 1960's Spider-Man cartoon. He received another three Emmy nominations, for his work on "Without a Trace" in 2004 and 2005, and for "Entourage" in 2007.

Interviewers often asked Landau to reflect on his early years as an actor. He won the Oscar for the "Ed Wood" role.

But during career doldrums, the New York-born Landau languished in third-rate projects such as the laughable 1981 TV movie "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island" and the dispensable 1983 mutant monster movie "The Being".

A year later, Landau was nominated again for Woody Allen's Crimes And Misdemeanors, where he played a well-to-do ophthalmologist who experiences a moral crisis after he has his mistress killed. He was married to co-star Bain from 1957 until their divorce in 1993. Landau was Commander John Koenig, and just as in Mission: Impossible, he starred with his wife, Barbara Bain.
