Temple Mount Riots: Over Thirty Injured as Muslim Protesters Target Israeli Police

Two more soldiers taken to hospital after Hebron car-ramming

In the past two years, Palestinians have killed 45 Israelis, two visiting Americans and a British tourist in stabbings, shootings and attacks using cars to ram into Israeli civilians and troops.

Tensions have soared since Friday.

Palestinian eyewitnesses said Israeli forces also raided Al-Maqased Hospital, looking for Palestinian injured during the clashes.

Ekrima Sabri, former mufti of Jerusalem and the head of the Supreme Islamic Council, told Arab News that what is taking place in Jerusalem is a form of nonviolent civil disobedience.

"The metal detectors are a part of Israel's plan to slowly take over al-Aksa Mosque", said Osama Aqabi, who hails from the Negev.

The "Day of Rage" is set to take place on Wednesday.

It later annexed East Jerusalem, in a move never recognized internationally.

Israeli border police disperse a Palestinian man during scuffles that erupted after Palestinians held evening prayers outside the Lion's Gate of Jerusalem's Old City.

Crowds chanted "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) as a number of initial visitors entered occupied Jerusalem's Haram Al-Sharif compound on Sunday when the Holy mosque was re-opened after it was closed on Friday.

Also on Wednesday, Israeli authorities closed the compound to Jewish visitors after what they call a violation by some Jewish individuals who appeared to have prayed at the site, which is forbidden to non-Muslim worshippers.

Questions about control of the site have frequently led to violent flare-ups between Israelis and Palestinians in the past.

He said Israel's respect for the historic and legal status in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the end of all attempts to create new facts on the ground is the key to restoring calm in the Holy shrines.

The vote came amidst spiraling tensions around the al-Aqsa mosque compound in East Jerusalem, with daily clashes between Muslim worshippers and the police. Safeguards now, of utilizing metal detectors, are direly needed to prevent future terror, and to protect worshippers of all faiths.

The party of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called for a "day of rage" in eastern Jerusalem and the West Bank to protest new security measures at the Temple Mount. Palestinians say the Israeli measures are aimed at paving the way for the Judaization of the city.

"In response to the immediate threat, forces fired shots towards the assailant", the Israeli military said. Under the status quo agreement, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged late on Saturday to continue to uphold, Jews are allowed to enter the compound under close supervision, but only Muslims are permitted to worship there.
