Two killed in Israeli embassy shooting in Jordan

US Ambassador to Israel condemns Halamish attack

In a statement released yesterday, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said an embassy security officer shot dead a Jordanian worker replacing furniture at the embassy after the worker attacked him from behind with a screwdriver.

"In accordance with the Vienna Convention, the security officer has immunity from investigation and imprisonment", said Emmanuel Nahshon, a foreign ministry spokesman. Jordanian government officials were not immediately available for comment.

Israel and Jordan are bound by a 1994 peace treaty, but tensions have been high in recent days after Israel put in place security measures at a highly sensitive holy site in annexed east Jerusalem.

Safadi said: "Jordan acted legally and morally [by complying to worldwide laws on diplomatic mission]".

Argaman reportedly reconstructed the attack with the Jordanians and produced evidence that the attacker - Mohammed Zakaria al-Jawawdeh, 17 - had a record of violent behavior, which cleared away any remaining doubts that the guard's account was true. The guard shot and killed the assailant.

At least one person was killed on Sunday in a shooting incident at the Israeli embassy in Amman, according to media reports.

The attacker was a carpenter working in a residential building used by the embassy, an Israeli statement said. The gunfire killed the Jordanian man and injured the Jordanian landlord of the building who was also present at the time.

On Friday, thousands of Jordanians took to the streets of Amman after the weekly prayer to denounce the Israeli measures at the Haram al-Sharif mosque compound, known to Jews as Temple Mount.

The incident is bound to further inflame Jordanian public opinion against Israel and complicate efforts to defuse tensions over a contested Jerusalem shrine. In response, Israel installed metal detectors at the site, a move that incensed the Muslim world. Two Jordanians later died, according to the agency and the news site Hala Akhbar, which is linked to the Jordanian military. Since the ruling, Abu Tayeh's tribe, the Howeitat, an important supporter of Hashemite rule, has been protesting and angrily denouncing the monarchy for the US military presence in the kingdom and criticizing the Jordanian military for "abandon [ing] [Abu Tayeh] instead of protecting him".
