US Navy Ship Fires Warning Shots at Iranian Vessel in Arabian Gulf

A US Navy ship has fired warning shots towards an Iranian vessel after it came within 150 yards in the Persian Gulf it has emerged

A U.S. defense official says a U.S. Navy patrol boat fired warning shots toward an Iranian Navy ship in the northern part of the Persian Gulf on July 25 after the Iranian vessel came within 140 meters of the U.S. ship.

Iran unveiled its latest air defence missiles on Saturday.

Iran's hard-line Revolutionary Guard later blamed the American ship for provoking the incident.

The Navy characterized the Iranian boat's actions as not following internationally recognized "rules of the road ... creating a risk for collision".

"The Iranian vessel did not respond to repeated attempts to establish radio communications as it approached", U.S. Naval Forces Central Command said in a statement. The Iranian ship did not respond to radio calls, flares and sirens as it came within 137 metres of the Thunderbolt, forcing the United States sailors aboard to fire the warning shots, the official said. After the U.S. ship fired the warning shots, the Iranian vessel stopped, officials said, at which point the Thunderbolt continued on her way. The Iranian craft was likely operated by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, which released a statement saying that a US boat approached an Iranian patrol craft this morning.

Unsafe interactions between USA and Iranian vessels are far from uncommon.

In January, the destroyer USS Mahan had fired a flare, warning sign, a ship of the Guardians of the iranian revolution which was approaching him.

The USS Thunderbolt recently conducted live fire drills on July 20th with the US cruiser, the USS Lake Erie, and patrol ships, the USS Tempest, USS Chinook, USS Squall and USS Firebolt.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard is a paramilitary force that answers directly to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Naval incidents with Iran are not entirely unusual, though ones involving shots fired are.
