Guam's residents feel United States patriotism but growing concern

The Latest Australia dubs North Korea reckless provocative

North Korea's threat against Guam spotlights a western Pacific U.S. territory that looms large as a military asset, despite being smaller than Singapore.

In the USA territory, there's a sense of patriotism among those who cite the island's history of Guam residents serving in the US military. I will be convening the Unified Coordination Group, which includes myself and the Rear Admiral, to discuss the state of readiness of our military and our local first responders.

Around 43,000 Filipinos now live in Guam, which is home to a U.S. military base and sits approximately 2,500 kilometers away from the Philippines.

Ellsworth B-1s were last deployed to Guam in August 2016, when they took over continuous-bomber-presence operations from the B-52 Stratofortress bomber squadrons from Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, and Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana.

Guamanians have served in all major USA wars since World War II and see military service as a source of pride. "Now if there is really that imminent threat and the intelligence really shows that's going to happen then, of course, we will recommend that evacuation", he added.

North Korean state media reported on Thursday plans for the strike would be ready by mid-August and will await the orders of the "commander-in-chief of the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) nuclear force", understood to be Kim Jong Un.

In August a year ago, the North's Foreign Ministry warned that all US military bases in the Pacific including Guam would "face ruin in the face of all-out and substantial attack" by the North's military.

Three-hundred-fifty airmen from the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota are among military personnel on Guam, the tiny Pacific island that's been the focus of recent global attention with escalating tensions between the US and North Korea.

North Korea assured the ASEAN it will be a "responsible nuclear power" and will pose no threat to other countries - unless they join forces with the United States.
