Rory McIlroy turns to best man after dumping caddie in shock move

McIlroy has failed to win a major since clinching the 2014 US PGA Championship

In the second significant player-caddie split of the summer, Rory McIlroy has fired his caddie of almost a decade.

McIlroy, who won his last Major at the 2014 PGA Championship, employed Fitzgerald in 2008 shortly after turning professional.

McIlroy, 28, is reported to have a new caddie on the bag starting at this week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone CC, just one week before the year's final major, the US PGA Championship, at Quail Hollow.

The surprise decision leaves the 28-year-old needing a new caddie for the Bridgestone Invitational, which starts on Thursday in OH, and the US PGA at Quail Hollow next week.

"He said, 'You're Rory McIlroy - what are you doing?" "He kept me positive out there and that was very much appreciated".

Fitzgerald's words clearly helped as McIlroy bounced back from an opening round 71 to shoot 68-69-67 over the next three days.

In fact, Fitzgerald was not happy with his own performance on that occasion at Augusta but clearly learned, and the bond he and McIlroy established in adversity certainly paid dividends in the stressful moments that followed over the years.

Phil Mickelson split with caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay last month after a 25-year partnership that netted the American five majors.

Diamond, who knows his way around a golf course, also helped his pal with his shaky putting a year ago. Alongside Fitzgerald, McIlroy took the throne of world number one golfer from Tiger Woods.

McIlroy's bag is unquestionably one of the more lucrative, with "Forbes" estimating Fitzgerald earned $1.65 million in the 12 months from June 2016 to June 2017.

Who will be Fitzgerald's replacement?

When the then 16-year-old prodigy was invited to play in the Irish Open in 2005, it was Diamond who was on his bag.
