Special prosecutor Robert Mueller asks White House for documents on Flynn

Senators move to protect special counsel in Russia probe

They have sought related documents from the White House and have asked related information from witnesses during interviews, a significant development in the Russian Federation investigation.

Special counsel Robert Mueller has requested the White House turn over documents concerning former national security adviser Michael Flynn, whose ties to both Russian Federation and Turkey have come under intense scrutiny since being ousted from the Trump administration.

The document request, while not a formal subpoena, was the latest signal that the probe is gathering pace.

The Times reported that prosecutors have been investigating Flynn's business dealings with a Turkish-American businessman who worked with Flynn a year ago, and are trying to determine if the Turkish government was behind payments to Flynn. Flynn did not comment to the Times.

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) - White House counselor Kellyanne Conway says President Donald Trump is "not discussing" firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller. "Beyond that, as I have stressed repeatedly, we continue to fully cooperate with the Special Counsel".

"We've said before we're collaborating with the special counsel on an ongoing basis", he told the newspaper.

They are said to have questioned witnesses about his dealings with Turkish-American lobbyist Ekim Alptekin, who paid his consulting firm Flynn Intel Group $530,000 during the United States election previous year.

He will investigate whether the former Apprentice star tried to obstruct the course of justice by pushing for an end into the inquiry into his former national security adviser. Leaders of the House Oversight Committee revealed last spring that Flynn may have broken the law when he failed to disclose payments from RT-TV, a Russian station, and the Turkish businessman in his application for a security clearance.

Former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara, said the New York Times report on Friday night eclipses previous reports that Mueller is working with more than one grand jury.
